January 2008
Today, I walked around and met up with a good friend of mine whom I had known since I was 11 years old from Sunday Chinese school. She is currently working as an English teacher here in China and coincidentally, we are both in Shanghai at the same time. We went to Starbucks and then to a video Arcade making it seem as if I had never left the US.
I will be meeting Ashley in a couple of days and then we will be taking off to southern China in search of warm weather.
After experiencing how cold it is here in China, we have decided to change our travel plans so that we head down to Southeast Asia where we can bask in the sun first and then work our way up back into China. We have a flight into Singapore leaving tomorrow and have plans to ferry it over to Indonesia and then up to Malaysia.

Who knew China could be this cold. I am definitely having a very hard time getting use to this weather. But other than the coldness, everything else is going Great. This is such an amazing city with cultural influences from around the world and ancient buildings that make this city paradise for architecture students. My cousin conveniently lives in the middle of the city so I have been able to walk everywhere. Aside from the abundance of Chinese people, this city can pass for any American city with a Starbucks at every corner and big shopping malls at very block. Upon the second day of arrival, we had a small family reunion with all these cousins that I never knew I had. There were some moments of awkwardness but I would say that overall, it was pretty successful.

So Ashley arrived in Shanghai two days ago and we were able to meet up with no problems. It was absolutely great to see her. We found some very generous couch surfers in Shanghai whom we are currently staying with. Andy, who is this drama teacher from Ireland and his girlfriend, Even. We walked around the French neighborhood of Shanghai last night and Ash and I have already fallen in love with it so much so that we have decided that we must return. Its shocking to see all the development and diversity in the city. Many of the streets feels much more like Europe than China. We found the cutest little Jazz bar where we met people from Australia and Cuba and listened to some amazing jazz music.
